The Unexpected

We had a lovely Thanksgiving. We had all of our family and some friends come for dinner and our family stayed with us for four days. It was really nice. It didn’t last long enough! The kids had so much fun playing with each other.

I was supposed to be in Daytona Beach, FL right now enjoying the warm weather and the beach and enjoying the Minister’s Meetings at the Evangelism Council that began today. Instead, I am at home. Last night as we were packing for our trip, my 83 year old MIL was bringing her dog inside and leaned forward over on her back steps to make Queenie come inside and she lost her balance, fell head first down the stairs, busted up her shoulder, banged up her head, and broke her pelvic bone. She laid there for 15 minutes screaming for help before the preacher who lives next door to her heard the ruckus and and rushed to help and called my husband.

I am thankful that it was not her hip she broke as she has broken her hip twice already and had been told if it happened again, she would likely never walk again. My MIL is feisty and refused to be admitted from the emergency room to the hospital. She didn’t want to pay the $975 Medicare would have billed her. So, we brought her back home. She is in terrible pain and can’t get around.

So, the next few weeks or more I will be caring for her and her husband and her brother who are all elderly and unable to cook and clean up for themselves. (She is their caregiver usually.) This means I must also care for her geriatric dog who is blind, deaf, and incontinent.

It is at times like these when you realize once again, how much your family means to you and that really, nothing else matters.

    Dear Melissa,
I hope your Mother in Law will be well enough so she is able to enjoy Christmas. You all are so blessed to be there for each other.
    Peace.
