Dress for Success as a Homemaker | Day 19

Welcome to Day 19 of our series, From Chaos to Calm: 15 Weeks to a Happy Home. Today’s post is really for all you stay-at-home moms and housewives. I’m talking about why it’s important to get dressed for the day even when you’re spending your days at home.

From Chaos to Calm: Day Nineteen

Dress for Success

Scripture Memory: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

When you’re a homemaker, it can be easy to stay in your pajamas all day and not get dressed. After all, you’re at home and no one is going to see you, right?

It’s not uncommon for stay-at-home moms or wives to struggle with taking care of their appearance. They don’t have anywhere to go – don’t plan to be seen in public—so they grab the most comfortable pieces from their wardrobe to wear during the day.

Perhaps, they stay in their pajamas unless they have to leave the house or simply throw on a pair of old yoga pants and a t-shirt. Hair in a ponytail or messy bun and voila—mom is ready for the day. Or is she?

Whether you are a stay-at-home mom, work-at-home mom, homeschooling mom, or stay-at-home wife, getting dressed each day will help you be more intentional in your homemaking.

I admit I love my comfy pajamas and there are days, especially in the cold of winter when I want my fleece jammies on all day just to stay warm! It’s okay to have “lazy days” every now and then. Mothers everywhere need them!

However, if you routinely stay in your “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing this in public” outfit on a regular daily basis, you are undermining your own success at home!

Just because you stay at home does not mean your job—child-rearing and homemaking—is any less important than your husband’s job in the workplace. Each morning, if you take a shower, get dressed, put on a little makeup, and even take the time to style your hair, you will feel different about yourself and your life.

Women feel better when they look put together! Get dressed after a few days of looking unkempt and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

In the past I’ve definitely worn a ponytail much too often – I’m not talking about a styled ponytail either. I had very long hair for many years – especially when my children were younger. Long hair does not go hand in hand with housework. Just imagine bending over the toilet to clean it with near waist-length hair.

A few months ago I cut my hair to just below my shoulders and put some layers in. Most days I curl my hair and I definitely feel more put together.

I also like to wear comfy clothes. I mean, why be miserable all day, right? But there is a way to be comfortable and still look good!

Stitch Fix has done wonders for my wardrobe. I’m not naturally good at putting together an outfit. I honestly really struggle with it! I’ve been using Stitch Fix for a couple of years from now and purchase almost all of my new clothes from them. It has made such a difference in my daily appearance!

4 Reasons Getting Dressed is Important

Believe it or not, getting dressed every day can actually make you more productive. Here are four reasons why it’s important for homemakers to get dressed every day:

#1 You’ll Feel More Motivated

Getting dressed every day can help you feel more motivated and inspired to get things done. When you’re in your pajamas, it’s easy to just lounge around all day and not accomplish anything. But when you’re dressed in something that makes you feel good, you’ll be more likely to take action and get things done.

#2 You’ll Be More Productive

Getting dressed every day can help you stay organized and on top of your game. When you’re in pajamas, it’s easy to just move slowly and not really have a plan for the day. But when you’re dressed, you’ll be more likely to stick to a routine and get things done in an orderly fashion.

#3 You’ll Feel More Confident

Getting dressed every day can help you feel more confident and put together. When you’re in your pajamas all day, it’s easy to feel like a slob. But when you’re dressed nicely, you’ll automatically feel better about yourself and be more likely to take on the day with confidence.

#4 You’ll Be More Active

Getting dressed every day can help you stay healthy and energized. When you’re in your pajamas all day, it’s easy to just lounge around and not get any exercise. But when you’re dressed, you’ll be more likely to move around and get active, which is key for staying healthy and energetic.

Being modest and humble in our dress doesn’t mean being plain or ugly. We can look fashionable without looking overdone or immodest. If you need help with your clothing selections, ask a friend who has good taste to go shopping with you!

Today, think about changes you can make to improve your dress and your outlook on life! Ask God to guide you in your dress. God cares about every little detail of our lives. He cares about each one of our concerns—no matter how insignificant we may believe them to be. He is our friend, our greatest confidant. You can ask Him anything!

Action Steps to Take Today

  1. Pray and ask God for wisdom when dressing for your day. And if you struggle with feeling motivated to get dressed each day as Him to help you overcome those feelings.
  2. Work on your mindset when it comes to getting dressed.
  3. Make a commitment to get dressed every day this week.
  4. Evaluate the clothes in your closet and discard anything you haven’t worn in the last year.

So next time you’re feeling unmotivated or uninspired, try putting on a nice outfit and see how that changes things. Getting dressed every day can do wonders for your productivity, so don’t skip it!

Do you struggle with getting “dressed” in the morning?

  1. I feel so much better when I get dolled up before I start my day. You are absolutely spot on about buying comfortable stylish clothes. I've been building my wardrobe based on comfort and beauty - it's not easy to find clothing that encompasses both - which means its been a slow process.
  2. Hi Melissa- For some reason I can't get this podcast to play correctly- I have tried on 2 different devices and there is no sound when it is playing. Can you check on this and let me know? thanks so much!! Zoa
    1. Ayron, I'm not sure why it's not working. I'll see if I can fix it, but I'm not all that technical when it comes to media files. I've had some problems with a few of the others and you'll find that the later posts don't have a podcast - sorry ! Creating each podcast takes me a couple hours or more {even though they're only ten minutes long} and it just got to the point where I didn't have time so.... maybe I'll eventually be able to start adding them again. Thanks for letting me know and I'll see what I can do. :)
  3. I love the mindset of getting dressed and pretty based on the importance of our job. I do work 2 of my own services but I spend most of my time at home. Yoga outfits would be perfect for my cleaning service. I usually only get pretty on occasion when I'm trying to be noticed by my husband. Now I'm going to do it for God!
  4. What a blessing this series has been for me! It has made me become so excited about my role as a Godly wife and mother. I've only just become to apply these to my life, but I find myself looking forward to each and every day now! Thank you so much!
  5. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this! Unfortunately the podcast is still not working. But A great message nonetheless... Something I'm very guilty of...
  6. So true. I find on the days I get in touch with my "inner Donna Reed/June Cleaver", I feel better and I am more productive. (I don't actually vacuum in heels and pearls, though, just a comfy retro vibe dress.) You are right we need to recognize that while we may not leave the house for work, we are working and should prepare ourselves as such.
  7. I really have been enjoying this devotional so much!! My sister and I live an hour apart but we are reading, listening and discussing it together everyday!! It has helped us both in a lot of area's and I just wanted to say thank you and how much! I have been enjoying "getting my toes stepped on" on occasion! Lol :)
  8. Hi Melissa, I have no sound when I try to listen to the podcast for today and tomorrow. It is working fine on the previous days and I just checked Day 21 (also OK). The player says it is playing and I've fiddled with the volume, all I get is silence/static. Also tried on a different device, same problem. Hopefully this is just me, but I wanted to alert you. Thank you for this series, you have obviously put a lot of time, energy and prayer into it. I am really enjoying it and I'm sure many other women are too. Christine
    1. Hi Melissa, I'm thought I checked that no one else had commented about sound problems before I started writing, but I don't seem to have looked very hard. Sorry I didn't mean to nag. I think you are doing a great job. Christine
      1. Thank you , Christine. I will try to figure out what's wrong with it. Thanks for letting me know! I'm behind on comments. I think someone else has mentioned this as well. Have a great day!
  9. Ok. I don't have this problem. I was trained to get up, either pull up the bed covers right then or prepare to change the sheets..then do your am bathroom routine brush teeth, wash face, cream, and then dress to the shoes. Hop to it and start the coffee, walk the dogs and feed the animals then I take my meds and meditate on the verse of the day...pray and get the husband started to try to get up. Dad was Army and husband is USMC/Army so those of us who had this were blessed with the getting up and to the shoes....PTL. I was so blessed to see you write about those that do not have this training looking like ......hmmm undone. Now for the clothes....once upon a time when I was working my way through college I modeled. size and parts..because I did this I got to pick an outfit instead of money...I learned that if you sort of make a paper doll of yourself you can try on expensive type clothes to see if you will look good in them. There are also ladies that sell makeup and beauty items that can show you makeup for you..they want you to try before you buy because they want you happy. The best advice I received about how many clothes was if you have not worn it toss it out. Have fun making a basic wardrobe. Basic for me is different than others...I'm disabled and require ease of on and off...so if I put on something that has one piece. I might not be able to ware it. So I have easy pieces....most all on sale....the diabetic socks are full price but.... Thank you for this lesson it was so very timely, we need to dress and act like we are the chosen ones that THE LORD tells us we are. Thank you.
  10. This is a great reminder for me as I definitely struggle with getting dressed in the morning. I don't wear frumpy sweat pants, but I usually wear yoga pants and a cute sweater or something and I feel good in them all day. When I wear jeans I feel so formal and it's harder for me to get down on the floor and play with my kids because I feel restricted. I will sometimes wear my yoga pants out but I always try to do my hair and face at least. Ninety percent of the time I always get dressed when we go outside the house because I usually feel very frumpy going out in sweat pants unless its an emergency! Thanks for the lesson today :)
