From Chaos to Calm: Day Thirty-Two

The Sabbath Day

Scripture Memory: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8-11

Today, I want you to reflect again on what God’s holy day means to you. Is it just another day for catching up on chores or do you set aside that time solely for worshiping your Creator?

The Sabbath is not just a day for holy convocation. (1) It is a real 24 hour period in which we are called to put aside worldly cares and spend time with God. The fourth commandment begins saying, “Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy.”

The fourth commandment in all its beauty is still relevant today! One of the most famous evangelists of all time, D.L. Moody said:

“The Sabbath was binding in Eden, and it has been in force ever since. This fourth commandment begins with the word ‘remember,’ showing that the Sabbath already existed when God wrote the law on the tables of stone at Sinai. How can men claim that this one commandment has been done away with when they will admit that the other nine are still binding?” (2)

By not setting aside the Sabbath as holy, we as Christians lose a tremendous blessing! There are many ways to keep the Sabbath holy and still enjoy the day. The Sabbath is a perfect day to enjoy being with your family while at the same time helping your children to learn more about God.

Some of our favorite activities for Sabbath include:

  • Afternoon walks
  • Going door to door witnessing
  • Visiting a park to enjoy God’s creation
  • Playing games such as Bibleopoly or Bible Trivia
  • Have a picnic and feed the ducks

The Sabbath should bring you joy! Make a list of things you would like to do with your family this Sabbath.

“If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.” Isaiah 58:13-14

Footnotes:

1. Leviticus 23:3 tells us: “Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.”

  1. I love that you focus on making the Sabbath a delight - it truly is a joy that we can look forward to every week. I heard a story once of a man who, when he would see some treat during the week that he would like to enjoy, would purchase it but wait to enjoy it until the Sabbath. I like that idea - delighting in the Sabbath by specifically setting things aside for that set-apart day. :)
  2. Thank you for this beautiful reminder that 'keeping the Sabbath Day holy' isn't an 'option'. It is just as important, if not more-so, than the other commandments He gave us. I have recommited our family to keeping this day holy. I was brought up doing that and somehow life happened. Never have the words "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound" meant so much to me. Bless you for writing this post! Blessings~
  3. Oh wow.. What an eye opener this post has been for me! We go to church every Sunday and its always a crazy mad rush out the door so the house is a bomb from the morning. We have 4 young girls. Then I come home from church grumpy knowing everyone gets to relax except me cause I can't sit at home with a mess... Once the mess is cleaned up.. It's time to prepare dinner.. The cycle that keeps me away from enjoying my family or even yet teaching them about the true meaning of the Lords day. I have really enjoyed this sabbath preparation posts, It's showed me how much God wants us to commune with him( not just at church) and get re- energized. I feel like now I'm gonna get tested this next Sunday! While I'm here I would like to thank you for your series.. It hasn't just helped me want to strive to have a home and character of a proverbs 31 woman but also its brought me closer to God. God bless you, your family and your work for him
    1. I just want to point out that Sunday is not the Sabbath. Yahshua rose on the first day of the week-Sunday if the first day is Sunday then Saturday I'd the seven day the Sabbath. I hope this info is helpful to you. May Yahweh continue to bless you and your family.
      1. You are correct! If people knew the history of how it was changed from Saturday to Sunday, they would see that keeping Sunday as their Sabbath is from the Catholic Church and they are following it’s ways, not God’s Commandment. Also, when studying the Commandments, they forget the Commandment in it’s entirety. God is very specific in telling us when the Sabbath is. I believe there is a reason He began that particular Commandment with the word ‘Remember’ so we would never forget.
      2. According to the Bible, the seventh day is the Sabbath - so Saturday. Also, if you look at other languages, the word for the seventh day of the week often means Sabbath. :)
  4. That's a good point you make, about how it's us that's missing out on something good when we choose to disregard this command from God. I would say the Sabbath is usually a delight at my house- we go to church in the morning, often eat out, and follow it up with watching football (at least in the fall).
