Every mom needs to to take time for herself – even if it’s just a few minutes a day. You don’t have to feel guilty when you take time for yourself.

Moms often wonder, Is it okay to do something just for myself? You might find yourself questioning your decision to leave the kids at home with dad and you feel guilty when you take time for myself.

Or you stress over all of those things you should be doing for your family. Things like, cooking a meal or cleaning the house or reading a book to the kids. But the truth is, sometimes moms need to time for themselves.

5 Reasons to Take Time for Yourself

1. Time for yourself makes you a better mom. Stepping away from the house, the kids, and responsibility makes you a better mother. You have time to decompress and take a deep breath. When you calm your stress with a bit of self-care you can find joy in the time you spend caring for your family and remain calm when things get out of hand.

2. You need to build quality relationships. The occasional lunch date with friends gets you out and away to reduce parenting stress but also forge relationships with the people that make up your support system. We all need support in our lives but we only have that when we build mutually supportive relationships.

3. You need to take time for your health. One of my favorite forms of exercise is walking – something I can do with – or without – the kids. You might want to join a gym. My daughter-in-law gets up early and goes to the gym at 5:00 am every morning and leaves the kids asleep in bed with her husband home.

4. You need time to develop a hobby and make plans for the future. I love scrapbooking, writing, reading books, and photography. Aside from reading a good book which I can take with me and do any where, all of those hobbies require time to practice and participate in. I also find myself needing time each week just to sit and plan for the coming days. Creating goals for myself and my family helps me be a better wife and mother. Planning takes time and thought which really requires some quiet.

5. You need quiet time with the Lord. Unless you are spending regular time in God’s Word and time spent in prayer you’re not growing as a Christian. Set your alarm a little earlier if possible and if not, find a regular time each day – perhaps before bed – to study the Bible and pray. I personally think that mornings are the best time for this, but you know what your schedule is like and if you’re a new mom with a baby who doesn’t sleep through the night yet or you have other circumstances that make it hard for you to wake up earlier, do what works best for you! Either way, make it a priority. You’ll be a better wife and mom for certain.
