The Proverbs 31 Woman and Being Prepared

As you’ve probably realized, I love the passage of Proverbs 31 and I believe it is just as relevant to our modern-day lives as it was in the Bible times. As Christian homemakers, we can draw inspiration from her example and I look forward to sharing these ideas with you!

The Virtuous Characteristics of the Proverbs 31 Woman

The Proverbs 31 woman’s virtues paint a picture of a woman who embodies a life grounded in faith and purpose. As I often say, Proverbs 31 isn’t about perfection – it’s about living life with purpose by seeking God’s will for your life.

  • Foresight: One of the key characteristics that stands out is her ability to anticipate the needs of her household and act accordingly. Proverbs 31:16 says, “She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.” This verse shows us her discernment and knack for planning, ensuring her family’s well-being.
  • Diligence: The Proverbs 31 woman is industrious and works diligently for her household. Proverbs 31:13 mentions, “She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.” Her commitment to her family’s welfare is evident, and she undertakes her responsibilities with love and dedication.
  • Wisdom and Kindness: More than just her actions, her words and the wisdom she imparts stand out. As Proverbs 31:26 states, “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” Her words are filled with grace, guiding her children and household in the ways of righteousness. The Proverbs 31 woman understands how important it is to prepare her family spiritually so they are ready when Jesus comes again.
  • Strength and Honor: Her character is fortified with strength and she carries herself with honor. We read in Proverbs 31:17, “She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.” This not only refers to physical strength but also emotional and spiritual resilience.

Emulating these virtues not only elevates the spiritual and emotional well-being of your home but also paves the way for practical preparedness in times of need.

The Proverbs 31 Woman and Preparedness

The Proverbs 31 woman is not just a role model due to her character and virtues; her actions also reveal a deep sense of preparedness and foresight, important qualities that homemakers can practice to ensure the safety and well-being of their families.

  • Foresight and Planning: “She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet.” (Proverbs 31:21). We see in this verse that the Proverbs 31 woman’s family is prepared for adverse conditions. She isn’t caught off guard by sudden changes in weather or unforeseen circumstances; instead, she has already taken steps to ensure her family is warm and protected. Her preparedness is a result of thoughtful planning and diligent action.
  • Economic Wisdom: In Proverbs 31:18, it states, “She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night.” She is mindful of her financial decisions, ensuring her endeavors are fruitful and contribute positively to her household’s stability. This economic wisdom is crucial in our modern times, especially when planning for emergencies requires financial foresight and budgeting. Most of us don’t have unlimited resources or an unlimited budget. Financial planning and budgeting is an important part of planning ahead for emergencies.
  • Providing for Her Household: “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” (Proverbs 31:27). The Proverbs 31 woman is vigilant, ensuring that every member of her household has their needs met. She takes pride in her home and her role as a homemaker. Her proactive approach means she anticipates potential problems and addresses them head-on, rather than being reactive.
  • A Source of Strength: “She girds her loins with strength and makes her arms strong.” (Proverbs 31:17). Her preparedness isn’t just physical; it’s also about cultivating inner strength. By fortifying herself spiritually, she becomes a pillar of strength for her family, especially in times of crisis. She girds her loins with the armor of God and trusts in Him even in times of crisis.

It isn’t possible to be 100% prepared for every possible family emergency. But it is possible to think ahead and do what you can to prepared for possible major disasters and other family emergencies. And where you are unable to plan or prepare, God has you in His hands.

The Proverbs 31 woman teaches us the importance of being proactive, exercising financial wisdom, caring for our households, and cultivating a strong faith. By embodying these principles, we can ensure that our families are not just surviving, but thriving, even in the face of unforeseen challenges.
