Can you believe Christmas is just a few weeks away? In our house, we have a lot of different traditions – everything from the recipes I share with my family to how we pick out a Christmas tree to the way we open presents on Christmas morning.

I love Christmas. It really is my favorite time of the year. There’s just something so special about the lights, the music, the excitement. But even more than that – it’s the message of Christmas – the meaning behind the first Christmas that really makes it special.

Some of our favorite traditions for emphasizing the message of Christmas – the true story of a baby born to this world so that he could save each one of us – include reading the Christmas Story from the Bible, setting up our table nativity each year, and making star ornaments and garlands.

The Star Movie

Another fun tradition our family enjoys is watching Christmas movies! Every year we choose a select few Christmas movies to watch as a family.

Have you heard about The Star movie? You’ll definitely want to see this movie with your kids!

In THE STAR, a small but brave donkey named Bo yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free, and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a lovable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas.

After you watch The Star movie, you can come home and make this super simple fun craft that could easily become a new family tradition if you don’t make them already.

Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments

I’ve been making these simple cinnamon applesauce ornaments for at least twenty years. They are easy to make, perfect for your kids to help with, and make your home smell amazing. Making every year is a fun yet simple way to create special memories of Christmas for your children.

Materials

  • 2 cups cinnamon
  • 2 cups applesauce
  • red grosgrain ribbon, baker’s twine, or twine
  • wax paper
  • rolling pin

Directions:

Mix the cinnamon and applesauce together until completely combined. If it’s too dry add a little more applesauce, more cinnamon if it’s too wet.

Sprinkle a sheet of wax paper with cinnamon and roll out the dough. Use a star cookie cutter to cut out your shapes.

Place the stars on a baking sheet. You may want to use a nonstick silicone baking mat.

Use a toothpick to create a small hole in the top of each star. Be careful not to make the hole too close to the edges so it doesn’t break.

Bake at 200 degrees for 2 1/2 hours and remove from oven. Allow to cool and then string the star ornaments with ribbon, tying a knot for ornaments, and a longer length or twine to make a garland.

Christmas time is a time to focus on your faith and family. I hope you love these ideas as much as I do and that your family is blessed this Christmas season!

  1. Thank you for sharing this Melissa. I've made these before years ago and I'm going to make these this year with my grandbabies and hang them up on the tree or as a garland around our home. I have different size stars and other cookie cutters. A big gingerbread cookie cutter and a big Christmas tree cookie cutter too! (We know not to eat them lol!) and they smell so good! And I've been wanting to watch that Star movie so we will do that this year too. I had forgotten about it. Thank you again for sharing!
  2. I just tried this recipe with my preschool class, they loved helping me mix the dough and cutting out the shapes! I really like this recipe because it’s so simple. Thanks for sharing your ideas. God bless!
  3. I remember making ornaments like this with my late grandmother when I was a kid. I have been wanting to make them with my kids, but I didn't know the recipe. Thank you for sharing.
