Learn How to Save Money Everyday on Laundry Products

Laundry is a fact of life that most of us would rather forget about. It’s easy to toss a jug of laundry detergent or fabric softener in the cart without checking prices, but this is one area where being frugal really pays. While it might seem like it’s only a few dollars here or pennies there, those savings do add up.

One way to save money on laundry products is to make your own detergent – in fact this has become quite popular in recent years. There are so many different ‘recipes’ out there, so it’s a good idea to try a few to see which one works best for your household. Be sure to price out all of your base ingredients to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

If making your own laundry soap isn’t an option, look for a high quality detergent in bulk sizes. Budget products might seem like a good deal, but they are often made with fillers and harsh ingredients that can cause your clothing to fade or even wear out prematurely. Better quality products will extend the life of your clothing purchases, and you’ll find that you won’t have to re-wash as often for missed stains.

Speaking of stains, pre-treating is a great way to save money! In fact, the best course of action is to rinse out a stain with cool water as soon as possible. This will eliminate many water based stains and keep the worst of it from setting in. I’ve found that aerosol pre-treatments work the best for grease based stains (follow the directions on the package) and for almost everything else, cleaning right away with a bit of detergent and cold water works best.

Another great way to save money on laundry products is to simply use less. Most loads will come clean with half the detergent, so unless you are dealing with heavily soiled items, start with the minimum amount and adjust from there. You can do the same with fabric softeners and dryer sheets, in fact when you open the box go ahead and cut the dryer sheets in halves or thirds – you won’t even notice a difference, but you’ve saved a bunch!

And while the product manufacturers would disagree, there are many laundry add-ons that can be skipped altogether. Especially with the combination products out there (like detergent with bleach or oxygen cleaner) there’s no need to add those products separately.

Last but not least, if at all possible choose to line dry your clothing outside. You’ll find that you don’t need to use fabric softener or oxygen cleaner, and if you’re line drying your whites you might not even need to use bleach. Sunshine and fresh air leave the best fragrance on line dried fabrics, and you’ll save money by not using your dryer as well.

Remember, you don’t have to do all of these at once. Pick one or two that fit your lifestyle best, and you’ll find that the savings will soon add up. Pretty soon these simple money saving tips will be second nature to you, and you’ll be reaping the benefits in more ways than one!

  1. A few months ago, I started using the 'quick' cycle on my he washing machine and found the clothes were still coming clean. I also invested in wool balls (purchased at Amazon) for the dryer. Our clothes are drying faster and no need for fabric softener.
  2. Hi Melissa! To save money I made my own wool felted dryer balls. It would be a fun project that your children could help you with. I got 100% wool yarn skeins on sale for a great price. I rolled the yarn very tightly into several balls, and felted them in the washing machine with hot water and a heavy fabric cycle to agitate them. They shrank so well they can bounce! :) I saved over half of the money I would have spent ordering them online. Please know I am keeping you and your precious family in prayer!! :)
