Spring cleaning is a yearly ritual that a lot of homemakers look forward to – including me! It’s a time to refresh and renew our homes, and it can be a spiritual exercise as well.

Beyond the physical tasks of washing and scrubbing our homes, we can meditate on spiritually preparing our hearts for the new season as well. It’s a time to reflect on my blessings, give thanks, and create a peaceful and welcoming environment for my family and loved ones.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 NIV

Have you ever wondered why they call it spring cleaning? Or how the tradition of spring cleaning got started? Historically, spring cleaning was necessary because homes were heated with wood or coal, which would leave behind a layer of soot and ash over the winter months. As the weather warmed up, it was time to open the windows, air out the house, and give everything a good cleaning.

Additionally, in some cultures, spring cleaning was tied to religious or cultural traditions, such as preparing the home for the Jewish holiday of Passover or the Chinese New Year.

Today, while many homes are heated with more modern and clean-burning methods, there are still several reasons why spring cleaning is a good idea. First, it’s an opportunity to refresh and renew our homes after a long winter. This can include things like washing windows, deep-cleaning carpets, and decluttering to create more space.

Spring cleaning can have mental and emotional benefits as well. Studies have shown that a clean and organized environment can improve your mood and reduce stress. Having a neat and tidy home creates a sense of pride and accomplishment that can positively impact our overall well-being.

While the reasons for spring cleaning may have changed over time, the practice remains a good idea for many reasons.

For me, spring cleaning is a time to let go of the clutter that tends to accumulate over the winter. I personally love spring cleaning because it gives me a sense of accomplishment and a fresh start. I love walking into a room that is sparkling clean, polished, and organized!

And, as a Christian homemaker, I also see it as an opportunity to recommit myself to God and His plan for my life. Praying over my home and asking God to bless each one who steps through the doors of my home is something I love to do each spring.

5 Tips for Spring Cleaning: Video

Putting Things in Order

In 1 Corinthians 14:40, Paul exhorts us to do all things decently and in order. In Leviticus 14, the Bible gives detailed instructions for cleaning and purifying a house that has been defiled by disease or mold.

And in Proverbs 31, we see the example of the virtuous woman who is diligent in caring for her household. And while the saying “cleanliness is next to godliness” is nowhere found in the Bible, we do understand that God is a god of order and not chaos.

Finding Joy in Spring Cleaning

As Christian homemakers, we can find joy in the yearly ritual of spring cleaning by focusing on the deeper meaning behind this practice.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing floors and washing windows, it’s also an opportunity to honor God and care for our families. Here are some ways you can find joy in this yearly tradition:

  1. Spring cleaning as a ministry of homemaking: Spring cleaning can be a way to serve our families and create a peaceful, welcoming environment for them. In Colossians 3:23-24, we are reminded that whatever we do, we should do it as unto the Lord. By approaching spring cleaning as an act of ministry to our families and to God, we can find joy in the process.
  2. Reflect on your blessings: As you clean and organize your home, take time to reflect on the blessings God has provided. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we are reminded to give thanks in all circumstances. When we take time to give thanks, it’s so much easier to find joy in the midst of the cleaning process.

  5. Cleaning solutions: Depending on your cleaning needs, you may want to have a variety of cleaning solutions on hand, including all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, and disinfectant spray. You can find some of my favorite homemade natural cleaners here.
  6. Rubber gloves: Protect your hands while cleaning with a pair of rubber gloves. Look for gloves that are durable and easy to clean.

With these tools on hand, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle any spring cleaning project with confidence and ease.

Get rid of clutter

Clutter can make cleaning more difficult and it can make your home feel cramped and disorganized.

Start by going through each room in your home and getting rid of anything that you no longer need or use. This could be old clothes, toys, or household items that are broken or no longer serve a purpose.

One great way to get rid of clutter is to use the KonMari method. This method was created by Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant, and author. The KonMari method involves going through all of your possessions and keeping only the things that bring you joy. By using this method, you can simplify your life and create a home that is filled with things that you truly love.
