Family Preparedness Plan: A Guide for Homemakers

As a wife, mom, and homemaker, I have always felt a strong sense of responsibility for preparing my home and family for emergencies, disasters, and lean times. Almost a decade ago I published a series here about emergency preparedness titled Are You Prepared? and in light of recent headlines, the war in Israel, and other concerns, I thought now was a good time to revisit this series, update it, and share ideas with you on how you can have a family preparedness plan in place for everything from hurricanes to job loss to pandemics (hello 2020) and even wartime.

While I strongly believe that we need to first and foremost rely on Jesus as our Protector and Salvation, I do believe it is prudent to do what you are able to prepare for possible emergencies.

Being Prudent and Prepared

In the Bible, Proverbs 27:12 emphasizes the importance of foreseeing danger and taking precautions. It’s essential to stay aware of current politics, economics, and events to make well-informed decisions for your family’s safety.

Proverbs 27:12 says, “A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”

I personally try not to dwell too much on current events – I don’t think any of us need to know every single bad thing that happens around the world every single day. I don’t think we were meant to know everything. There’s so much heartache in this world!

For my own mental health, I don’t like to watch or read the news as much as my husband does. I used to spend way more time consuming news and I found that it caused me to feel anxious. So, I made a conscious decision years ago not to watch or read as much.

But I do want to know enough that I’m not caught off guard when something major happens.

Reading and gathering opinions from multiple sources can help you make better judgments. Trust your instincts when something doesn’t feel right and, most importantly, always refer to the Bible as your ultimate source of authority.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the severity and urgency of global events. For instance, the threat of violent persecution from extremist groups is real and cannot be ignored.

Family Preparedness: Faith

The most crucial preparation you can make for your family is building a strong foundation in faith. Here are some ways to strengthen your family’s faith:

While spiritual preparedness and having a firm foundation of faith should be your main priority, I believe it’s wise to give thought to how you will take care of your family in times of crisis or emergency.

There are many different scenarios that could make it worth your while to prep a basic family emergency plan. A few different reasons why having an emergency plan and stocking up on food and other supplies can come in handy:

  • job loss or illness
  • natural disaster
  • financial uncertainty
  • pandemics/lockdowns
  • wartime
  • man-made disasters
  • family emergencies
  • economic or social disruptions
  • long term challenges

I’ve known several families who have faced unexpected illnesses or job losses and they didn’t have the resources they needed to survive without assistance. Or imagine facing a situation without electricity for several weeks or having no access to a grocery store. In case of a natural or man-made disaster separating your family members, would they know what to do?

Being prepared for emergencies is an essential aspect of caring for your family in these unpredictable times. Balancing both spiritual and physical preparedness will ensure that your family is equipped to face any challenges that may arise. Remember, it’s better to be prepared and safe than to suffer the consequences of being unprepared.

So let’s learn more about how to create a family emergency plan.
