I’m sharing 5 easy ways you can easily reduce waste today – and you can feel good about it. Just remember that simple changes can have a huge impact on the world around us!
1. Purchase and use reusable items instead of single use items. I love using cloth grocery or market bags because plastic takes so very long to break down in the landfills. You could bring mason jars with you to your local health food store to fill with bulk food items instead of their plastic boxes and bags.
Also, instead of using plastic sandwich bags, you can use reusable containers. Instead of using plastic wrap to store your leftovers, I love using mason jars.
2. Shop second hand. Instead of always buying new, try shopping at second hand stores or yard sales for things you might need that have been gently used, cost less, and help save resources.
Clothing, toys, bread machines, baskets, mason jars, furniture, iron skillets, sewing machines are just a few of the things I’ve purchased second hand over the years.
3. Reduce your home’s waste. You’ve heard the saying, “Use it up, wear it out. Make it do or do without.” That quote is such a great way of reminding ourselves to use what we have until it’s really and truly done. And it reminds us that sometimes the best way to reduce waste is to just do without. Do you really need another widget?
Another idea is to compost your food scraps instead of throwing them into the garbage, which eventually ends up in the landfill. A much better use for food scraps is compost which can later be used in your garden and flower pots.
Avoid purchasing items which have double packaging. So, for instance, you could purchase a big bag of chips instead of a box of individual sized bags. You can easily make your own individual servings by portioning out food into reusable containers.
