Mornings can be rushed and a bit stressful getting everyone where they need to go, on time, and with everything they need. And if you were up late helping your kids with homework or doing chores of your own, a busy morning can leave you feeling exhausted before the day has even begun. This is the general case around my house!

And getting up earlier doesn’t always seem like an option if you’re not getting enough sleep as it is! It definitely takes effort, but it is a simple action that can calm your day if you use it well. Just an extra 15-30 minutes in the morning is all you need to have a little quality time for yourself and have a great start to the day.

Let’s talk about what you can do during that small time frame to set your day off on the right foot even when you’re a tired mom.

7 Morning Rituals for Tired Moms

Here are 7 of my favorite morning rituals for shaking off the sleepiness and getting the day off to a good start…

1. Warm water with lemon.

There are many benefits of enjoying warm water with lemon first thing in the morning (Yes, even before the first cup of coffee!). Lemon water fights dehydration from the night, boosts your immune system with Vitamin C, nourishes your brain cells with potassium, helps your liver flush-out toxins, cleanses your kidneys and even makes the pH levels in your body more alkaline which has been shown to fight inflammation and premature aging. It’s a natural, and delicious, energy booster.

2. Prayer and devotion time.

Starting your day with even a few minutes reading God’s Word and talking with Him is the #1 thing you can do to help you focus on what you need to do, adjust your attitude if needed, and alleviate stress.

You don’t have to spend an hour reading and praying – although if you feel led and have time, what a blessing! Even just a few minutes reading a few verses and saying a quick prayer is enough to get your day off to a great start!

3. Morning stretches.

Your body is probably a little stiff in the morning from sleeping all night so it’s always good to do some gentle stretching to help you wake-up in the morning.

You can stretch while you’re still in bed. Pull your knees up to your chest, wrap your arms around your legs and gently rock side-to- side on your back to stretch out your spine and release stored energy.

When you get up, do a full body stretch, reaching your arms as high as you can, wiggling your fingers and even standing on tip-toes to get your lower body involved.

4. Get in touch with nature.

Being one with nature is almost always an instant mood booster. God created this beautiful world for our senses! Stepping outside to breathe in some fresh air is a fast way to start to your day off great.

Take your warm lemon water and sit outside for a few minutes to soak in God’s love for His creation!

5. Take a morning walk.

Walking in the mornings helps relieve stress, loosens your muscles, helps you lose weight, and clears your mind. Even a 15 minute walk each morning can have tremendous effects on your mind, body, and soul!

6. Count your blessings.

Our lives are so full of blessings, but we get so wrapped up in what we don’t have that we overlook the great things already in our lives. When you’re feeling tired and stressed, take a moment to remind yourself just how blessed you are by thinking of 5 things that you’re grateful for. This will lift your mood, naturally increasing your energy level.

You might enjoy keeping a gratitude journal and writing down three things you are thankful for each morning before your day starts.

7. Check your planner or household notebook.

And finally, before you start your day, look over your homemaking planner, make note of the top three things you need to do to day, and get a mental picture of how your day should look. Check back in with your planner throughout the day to make sure you’re on track!

  1. Thanks! Can I add a suggestion to the last one? When we look at our planner for the day, before we start our day, we should bring it and our plans to God in prayer, asking that He will add or remove our duties as He sees fit... And praying to Him, telling Him that we surrender all of our plans to Him for the day and ask His will do be done in our lives and not ours- then a moment of silence allowing Him to guide each day . This helps us to surrender fully to Him and allows Him to have full control as He desires to have.... It's been such a blessing when I started this !!!
    1. Alyce, I love your suggestion! I usually ask God to guide me during my devotion time, but I love the idea of praying over your planner/ plans for the day! Thank you for sharing!
  2. I love my morning prayer time. I add counting my blessings to that. Question about the warm water...I usually have tea, and sometimes I add lemon. Does it have to be plain water for it to count? I'm willing to try that!
    1. Hi Kristan, I'm sure a nice herbal tea would be beneficial! However, warm water and lemon has benefits for your liver and kidneys. Drinking tea would be different I believe. Check out this article: http://thechalkboardmag.com/why-you-should-drink-warm-water-lemon Hope that helps!
  3. Hello, I really like the list you provided. I am in the process of changing up my morning routine and am going to add a few of your suggestions to mine to see how it goes. The one thing I found helpful for me in my routine with a busy family is to review my planner the night before, so that I have a plan and am prepared for the next day... just a suggestion that might work for others. Cheers, Lisa {http://www.dreamsandcaffeine.com}
  4. Love the list! Esp the morning prayer and devotion time! Helps keeps me grounded. I to do this when the kiddo is still sleepin. Thank you for these emails I enjoy reading them. God bless !
  5. Even though I am not a mom, this helped me. Although I have tried room-temp water with lemon, I never tried it with warm water. I will indeed try this soon! Thanks :)
  6. I do notice a difference when I drink warm lemon water...but I hate lemon water, especially warm. I find a little bit of maple syrup added to it helps. Plus, maple syrup actually is pretty good for you as far as sweeteners go. (visiting from Wake Up Wednesday)
  7. Great ideas! I really love the ideas of spending time in nature and drinking the lemon water! How much lemon do you add to the water? Thanks for the ideas, I'll try implementing a few of these!
  8. Hey Melissa! Let me tell you a secret.. I was a youth leader at a church, womens ministry right hand woman, Bible study every time the doors opened, pastors wife best friend, Girl Scout troop leader, parent volunteer for everything at the school, full time mom, corporate working girl in the city by day and ranch wife by night.. Most people looked at me in awe thinking I was the it girl, the one who had it all together! Then God laid it on me that I am not the it girl but rather a sad circus clown who desperately needed to get right. So He put me in a season of drastic change.. Suddenly I found myself unable to keep the lie and the image up that I had the perfect marriage when in reality my husband was an abusive addict and I merely hid the bruises, the financial messes he made, the cheating he did on me and kept on lying right up to the front row of church on Sunday. God led me away from that marriage and even though I was scared to death to be a single mom I finally learned to trust and lay it in His hands.. He returned to me blessings ten fold! I was scared to leave behind my corporate job but after a major health crisis due to exhaustion and infections raging through my fragile body because I chose not to care for my temple, I trusted Him as He led me to my true calling as a homemaker. Believe me Im not perfect... there are days where my home looks like a nuclear bomb just went off but thats where God met me again... He introduced me to you through Facebook and I was never a planner type... I kept an agenda book for work but never more than that and I certainly was not disciplined and that was evident by how many late appointments?! Your free printables and your agenda book mixed with all these wonderful blogs and studies has deepened my faith, challenged my faith and took me from the yes preacher girl to the yes God girl! Suddenly my life is on track, my faith is on fire, and God keeps meeting me in my low places to lead me to high places! My blessings keep rolling in and I am standing here in awe of Him! Its not easy, its not beautiful, its downright scary to venture off into the wilderness but if you just trust, which believe me after over 30 years of abuse in various forms is hard, He will truly rebuild you! I LOVE you Melissa! You are truly a blessing sent to me from God and even though it has been recently laid on me to disconnect from social media other than my emails, I still stay connected to you like a soul sister I have yet to meet but still one I turn to at two am when the fear and tears set in and I just need a cup of hot tea and someone to lead me back to where I need to be.. I love you dear Melissa! Thank you for introducing me to not only me but most importantly to a true Father who will never leave me nor forsake me! In Christian Love,
  9. I started getting up at 6am (I have to leave for work by 7:45am, "wake" the toddler at 7:30 - he's almost never asleep but he loves goofing off in his crib [yay!] - so this is something I should have started a long time ago but I used to wake at 6:30 or even as late at 7 and rush thru getting ready. Now I wake at 6 and spent at least 30 minutes with God before I do anything else. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I'm learning that God gives grace and sustains me even when I wasn't disciplined (or able, but usually it is a discipline issue) to get a full night's sleep. Your encouragements to get up earlier are what prompted this, so thank you.
