When You feel Overwhelmed + Bible Journaling

Today I’m sharing with you the Bible Journaling Psalm 61 that I did earlier today. It was a restful day – I even got to take a two hour nap – and I find that coloring in my Bible and Bible Journaling really make me feel at peace and give me a sense of joy during the process.

This morning I asked my girls which book of the Bible they’d like to read next. They said Song of Songs. I have to tell you, it’s such a romantic book of the Bible, I was a little nervous, but decided to push through and we read the first three chapters together… then Hannah asked a question about scarlet and purple and we got off on a discussion about the adulterous woman in Revelation. That was a fun talk! It made me want to study the book of Revelation with them again as it’s been a while and I think they could use a refresher.

Yesterday we talked about how to clean when you feel overwhelmed. It can be so hard to feel motivated and even joyful when we are overwhelmed. It can also be so hard to keep on top of chores when life is so overwhelming.

Bible Journaling Psalm 61

As I was flipping through some of my saved Bible Journaling ideas this morning, I came across one on the verse Psalm 61:1-3:

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. NIV.

The journaling portion of this artwork says, “Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer, from the ends of the earth I call to You when my heart is overwhelmed.”

And I just knew I needed to do this page and share it with you.

This is a fairly simple layout, but I’m not that great with lettering so I erased words over and over and over again until I was happy with it. Remember how I said it was important to draw very lightly with your pencil so you can easily erase? Yeah, I don’t know if I’ve ever erased so much on one layout!

But the finished product, while not as perfect as the original, makes me happy and I think it turned out really pretty.

Materials Used

After sketching out the design in pencil, I traced the pencil lines with my Micron pens. I used a .45 pen on the larger words, and the .35 pen on the smaller words as well as the hearts, the arrow, and the box around the verses. To highlight the box further, I drew a second line around the inside of the box, purposefully not straight, with the .25 pen. I colored in the hearts with a dark pink colored pencil.

I want you to know that if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. I have often felt overwhelmed with life and my one saving grace is that I can always turn to Jesus and cry out to him for help!
