The Proverbs 31 woman puts her trust in Jesus. But sometimes it’s hard, you know? That’s why today we’re looking at how we can ask Him to increase our faith just like the disciples did so long ago.

Hopelessness. It’s a terrible and powerful feeling.

Sometimes, we equate our faith to our cars gas tanks. We fill it up by listening to a praise and worship song, going to church, reading a passage of scripture, and then we just stop there.

We get lower and lower and get closer and closer to reach the “E” on our gas tank, then we do something to go fill it back up!

In Luke 17:1-10, we read about the original twelve disciples asking Christ to increase their faith. I believe they kept wanting to top of their tanks in a sense, but their hearts were not completely understanding what God was asking of them. They had the desire, but the wisdom and really listening to what was being said was missing.

This is what we do at times. Even if our heart is in the right place, we are not allowing God to speak to us. We are not being quiet, and truly listening to what He is trying to say and ask from us.

I believe that when the disciples asked this of Christ, they were asking for a quick fix. If they were not, or if they were truly desiring to know how to increase their faith, they would ask. Not tell Christ to, “Increase Our Faith!”

Rather, Christ takes this as an opportunity to teach. To not allow a quick fix, but rather tools and understanding so that they know how to constantly increase their own faiths.

Christ replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.”

This is Christ’s way of saying that you do have faith! Even the smallest of all the seeds, the mustard seed, you can still do great things! You do not have to have this giant, mountain of faith!

As humans, we sometimes want the most. The biggest. The best. And even more than others so we can do more or flaunt more.

But rather, in Christ’s most humble way as one hundred percent God, and one hundred percent human, he said it does not need to be this big huge thing.

It can be teeny, tiny, to do great big things in His name!

I don’t blame the disciples for their desire. I believe it’s normal for our faith to waver at times, to feel helpless even when understanding that God is still there. Still mighty. God’s grace covers us. Jesus is strong when I am weak.

What is important is that we receive these words from Christ and allow them to penetrate our hearts. To convict our hearts.

To see that smaller is better because that’s where the humility lies.

That is where we truly lay down anything that separates us from Christ and allow that tiny mustard seed of faith to get us through the difficult times.

The sad times. The discouraging times. The traumatic times. We get through these times when we allow ourselves to use His gift of faith and move mountains!
