Even if you stay on top of your chores and keep your house neat and tidy throughout the week, the thought of deep cleaning your home can bring on a little unwelcome anxiety.

And if cleaning your home is a task long overdue on your to-do list? It can be downright overwhelming.

How to Get Started Spring Cleaning

That’s why I’m sharing some tips and strategies to embrace to make spring cleaning a little less stressful. Because whether you’re a busy mom, or just feel overwhelmed by life in general or housekeeping, knowing how to get started can be a challenge.

Make a Plan

First things first – make a plan! You shouldn’t charge into spring cleaning without putting a little thought into the process. It does make sense to clean certain things in a specific order.

A checklist can help remind you to dust the ceiling fan and air vents before sweeping and vacuuming. Whether you find one to download and print online or pull out a pen and paper and create your own, making a list of all the things that need to be cleaned will help make the whole experience easier.

Another way to avoid stress when spring cleaning your home? Don’t rush the process. If it’s taken you a few months to accumulate the mess, don’t expect to get rid of it in a day.

Spread your spring cleaning out over a few weekends if you need to. Look at your list and divide your tasks up by type, by room or by whatever system makes things easiest for you.

Or, do a little something – anything you can manage – everyday.

Take Inventory

Before you begin, you should also take inventory of your cleaning supplies and get anything you need before you start. Don’t put yourself in a position where you’re forced to stop mid-scrub and head to the store.

With a little foresight, you should be able to anticipate and stock up on anything you need before you begin. It isn’t the world if you have to make a Target run halfway through your cleaning session, but it’s certainly less than convenient.

My favorite place to buy cleaning supplies? Grove Collaborative.

Declutter

When you are ready to spring clean, think about decluttering your space first and go ahead and get rid of all that clutter! Don’t clean stuff that isn’t serving a purpose.

Make a first pass through your home and get rid of stuff that’s simply taking up space. Donate clothes you won’t wear again, books you won’t read, and decor you’re tired of looking at. Recycle old mail and magazines. Clear off your counters and surfaces, and they’ll be easier to wipe down later.

An easy way to declutter is to simply fill a bag every day and take it out of the house. If your family struggles to let things go, be sure to use a black plastic trash bag – out of sight out of mind – and remove the stuff from your home as fast as possible! Of course, don’t throw out things that would cause stress or heartache for a loved one. Be respectful.

But if you can let it go – do it!

Enlist Help

Lastly, don’t do it alone! If you share your home with family, you certainly aren’t the only one responsible for keeping your home clean and organized.

Spring cleaning is a great opportunity to teach the kids to help out around the house. Make the process fun by creating checklists for your children and awarding stickers or prizes for completed tasks.

Find ways to make it a game, and your family will be much more eager to help out.
