Preparing Your Family for Eternal Life

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” Matthew 24:36

The most precious gift I’ve ever been given is the gift of motherhood. More than anything I want my children to be in heaven. That’s why I’m sharing 10 ways to prepare your family for eternal life. I hope you’ll find some inspiration to use in your own home and family life.

10 Ways to Prepare Your Family for Eternal Life @ AVirtuousWoman.org

I originally wrote this post a number of years ago, but it’s still just as relevant today!

My husband and I have been talking a lot as of late about preparing our children, our family, our home for the Kingdom to Come. This isn’t a new topic. Over the years we have tried to instill in our children a love for God and for serving Him. But the idea has taken on new urgency.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

“Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.”

Do you feel it, too? This sense that we don’t have much time? That this world is coming to a close? That Jesus is really coming soon. I hear my children talk about growing up in heaven and it warms my heart. They want to go to heaven. I mean, really want to go to heaven.

[Tweet “Do you feel it, too? This sense that we don’t have much time? That Jesus is really coming soon?”]

More and more, when I talk to people, even people I would consider nominal Christians, I hear things like, “I believe Jesus is coming back soon, don’t you?” or “Man, things are getting bad, it won’t be much longer.”

Jesus is Coming Soon

Jesus said:

“Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

“Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

“Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock crowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” Mark 13: 28-37

Watch. Lest he find you sleeping.

I don’t want to be asleep! I want to be prepared. I want my family prepared to see Him face to face. I don’t want to be one of the multitude that cries out to the rocks to fall on me!

“And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

“And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

“And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Revelation 6: 12-17

Speaking of the Seven Seals of Revelation, did you know that the only one that hasn’t already happened is the Seventh Seal? We are in the last days. No question about it.

What are you doing to prepare your home for the soon coming of Jesus?

10 Ways to Prepare Your Family for Eternal Life

Here are some things we are doing in our home:

  1. Memorize Scripture
  2. Family Worship in the Morning and Evening
  3. Learn about church history.
  4. Listen to the Daily Audio Bible
  5. Spend time in nature.
  6. Make the Sabbath a Delight. It should be the best day of the week!
  7. Don’t underestimate your children’s ability to understand the deep things of God.
  8. Talk about heaven – often.
  9. Read the Bible together. Or read the Bible Story Books out loud.
  10. Pray together. Earnestly.

Today, over lunch, this was the conversation – totally not prompted by me.

“Mom, will we sleep in heaven?”

“Well, the Bible says that there is no night in heaven, but when we come back to the new earth after the 1000 years, I think we will have night time.”

“Then, how will we know which day it is?”

“Well, I don’t know, but I do know the Bible tells us that from one Sabbath to the next Sabbath we will come and worship before God, so somehow we’ll know.”

What I love about these conversations so much is that as silly as the questions may sound when repeated here, these questions mean my children believe heaven is a real place where we will live and have fun together!

Thank you, Jesus!

It seems we are not doing enough. Right now our children believe in God and Heaven but their religion is one that is catholic and Islam together because we are a mixed household

Aneta, I would encourage you to study in depth your household mixed faith - catholic and Islam. As these faiths have two different aspects on eternity.

Shew! It is scary to realize that I'm not doing enough. We have a 7 month old and I feel like right now, singing Jesus Loves Me is about the extent of what I can do. But it's not enough, and I struggle with ways to expand on that. Thank you for your suggestions and thoughts. This was very enlightening!

Family Worship has been on my "to do" list for awhile, but I'm not much of a morning person, so it's always a struggle. I know it's important and I need to raise it on the priority list.

We try to take every opportunity we can to remind our kids of the gospel - the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. My husband and I explain to them that we have a wonderful Savior who's ready and willing to forgive our every sin if we'll only put our faith and trust in what Jesus did for us on the cross. We do many of the things on your list, but our main prayer is that they will come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ at a very young age.

this is a very good topic Melissa. our children are never to young to be prepared for eternity. I believe they way we raise them will help them in their relationship with the Lord later in life. all those things you've mentioned Melissa that you do to prepare your children for eternal life are awesome also for just living life in general. without a relationship with Jesus there is no eternal life with Him. Also my children and I always allow Jesus to lead us to people that need to know him and share with them the gospel message. Preaching the gospel and being that Christian example is why we are still here waiting for eternity. we love him because he first loved us -

You said, "never underestimate you children's understanding of the deepness of God." I couldn't agree with you more. Ask your children about God and heaven. You keep saying, "the bible says" but what does God say? If we must become like little children ... little children understand and know God before ever even touching a bible. I needed it to remind me of things I already knew. We don't do what the Bible says out of fear of not going to heaven, that's asinine. We love God and He loves us because we GET to, just like our children love us and we love them. The Bible is perishable, it's a man made idol too. It's good, but never to be put before God, loving your neighbor, or loving and living a joyful life with your children.

Stephanie, the Bible IS God's Word. We can know what God says because He tells us through His Words in the Bible. God's Word does not change. The Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is NOT a man made idol. John 1:1-5 says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 1 Timothy 3:16,17 says: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. We can trust the Bible because it is God's Word. And yes, loving your neighbor and living a joyful life is important but never think that those things are separate from the Word of God.

Not gonna lie. 2020 was a hard year. And not just Not gonna lie. 2020 was a hard year. And not just because there was a pandemic. Our family has faced many trying times in the past but 2020 gave us some doozies. I’m looking forward to a new year. The beginning of the new year always feels like a fresh start to me. It feels like HOPE. But the truth is, whatever heartaches and hardships you and I were facing on Dec. 31 will most likely still be there on Jan. 1. That’s why it’s hard to keep New Years resolutions. It’s easy to feel motivated for a few days or a couple weeks until we realize life hasn’t really changed and things are still hard. But if we want to see real change it takes hard work and real effort. It takes showing up every day - even when it’s hard. Whether that means working on your fractured relationships or setting healthy boundaries or cultivating self disciple... whatever that hard thing is that you need to work on ... it will only get better if you work on it. We aren’t promised an easy life. But we are promised an “Ever Present Help in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1 *

🏠 Being a homemaker is such an important role. 🏠 Being a homemaker is such an important role. It’s a ministry to your family and all who enter your home. But I want you to know: You don’t have to be perfect. ❤️ There’s a fine line between teaching your children to be neat and insisting on perfection. No one can meet that kind of standard and it can be detrimental to the emotional health of your family. What we want for our homes is to provide a space that is neat and clean enough that your family and friends feel comfortable and well loved. There is freedom in accepting the fact that you’re not perfect. Not to make excuses for slovenliness - but to give yourself grace. It’s when we recognize our weakness that we find ourselves reaching out to Jesus to receive the power that comes only from him. As homemakers, when we can find grace for the moment when we accept His Gift. “But now for a brief moment grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us an escaped remnant and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our bondage. Ezra 9:8 Let His Grace wash over you, cleanse your weary heart. Homemaking isn’t about creating a perfect space. It’s about creating a home where loved ones feel cared for and nurtured.

❤️Your attitude about homemaking matters.⠀
⠀
A homemaker by definition is someone who manages and makes a home. 🏠⠀
⠀
But, anyone can clean and organize a home. ⠀
⠀
☑️ Homemaking is about more than checking off the items on your to do list.⠀
⠀
Learning how to be a homemaker means you learn how to make your home feel like haven of peace and love. You seek out ways to make your home feel inviting. You work at it.⠀
⠀
There is no easy button for homemaking. There are easier, more efficient ways to do chores, but the chores still have to be done. If you live in a house, you will create the need for the house to be tidied every day and cleaned on a regular basis.⠀
⠀
Having the right attitude about homemaking is the first step in learning how to be a homemaker.⠀
⠀
The good news is, even if you’ve been struggling with your homemaking, you can always go to God and ask Him for help. ⠀
⠀
He sees the unseen work of your hands. And He loves you very, very much. He wants to help you succeed. ⠀

🙏 If you’ve found it difficult to have a regu 🙏 If you’ve found it difficult to have a regular time with Jesus every day, you’re not alone. Lots of busy Christian women struggle to find time for a daily prayer and devotion time. ⠀
⠀
But I still want to encourage you to start your day with God! ⠀
⠀
⏰ If it’s hard to spend 30 minutes in the morning for a quiet time, I want you to remember you can still begin your day with God – even if that means saying a short prayer before your feet hit the floor in the morning.⠀
⠀
✝️ I also want to encourage you to memorize this verse:⠀
⠀
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.⠀
Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” Psalm 143:8 📖⠀
⠀
In the morning you can recite this verse and say a prayer. It doesn’t have to take a long time. Although – if you do have time – you will be greatly blessed by spending more time in prayer and devotion.⠀
