There are many benefits to being a stay-at-home mom. It’s not always an easy decision and not always possible for every family to make that decision, but I wanted to share a few reasons to be a stay-at-home mom for those of you who may be considering it – or simply to affirm those of you who have already made that decision.

As a stay-at-home mom for over 30 years, I can say with confidence that there is no greater job in the world. Though it comes with its challenges, it is also the most rewarding experience I could have ever asked for. I have been able to watch my children grow and learn in a safe and loving environment, and I am so grateful for that.

It has been a privilege to be a part of their lives every step of the way, and I wouldn’t trade that time for anything. If you are considering becoming a stay-at-home mom, I encourage you to go for it! It will be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Having said that, I want to stress that I don’t think being a stay home mom is the only choice. If you need to work outside the home for whatever reason, you are still a good mom. I would never presume to know what is right for every family. I know many mothers who work outside the home who are wonderful moms!

But, for me, I have loved being a stay-at-home mom and I wanted to share a few reasons to be a stay-at-home mom with you today.

20 Reasons to Be a Stay-at-Home Mom

When you become a mom, one of the big questions you have to answer is whether or not to stay at home with your kids. For some moms, the answer is easy – but for others, it’s a bit more complicated.

Here are 20 reasons to be a stay-at-home mom:

#1 You get to be the one who is always there for them.

One of the best things about being a stay-at-home mom is that you don’t have to miss out on important milestones in your child’s life. You’ll be there for their first steps, their first words, and all of the other special moments in between. You won’t have to worry about missing school events or important appointments.

#2 You get to spend more time with your kids.

This is one of the biggest benefits of being a stay-at-home mom. You get to be there for all the little moments that make up your child’s day. You’ll get to see them learn and grow, and you’ll be able to spend more time with them than if you were working outside the home.

#3 You can control the environment in which your children are raised.

You can make sure that they are being raised in a safe and loving environment. You also get to decide what they are exposed to and how they are being raised.

#4 You can instill your values in your children from a young age.

If you want your children to be raised with certain values, being a stay-at-home mom allows you to do that. As Christians, this is more important than ever!

#5 You can shield your children from negative influences.

You can choose what they are exposed to and make sure that they are getting positive influences in their lives. There are so many evil things in this world that threaten the innocence of our children, having a say in what your child does all day long goes a long way in protecting them.

#6 Save money on childcare.

According to a recent study, the average cost of childcare is now upwards of $10,174 per year. For many families, this expense can be a real burden. One way to reduce the financial strain of childcare is to have one parent stay at home with the kids.

#7 Be more involved in your child’s education – or even homeschool.

I loved being able to homeschool my kids through high school and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to do so. It was so rewarding to be able to watch them grow and learn. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to do so. I’m grateful for the flexibility that homeschooling provided our family. I’m also grateful for the close bonds that we formed as a result of homeschooling. My kids are now grown and they’re doing great things. I’m proud of them and I know that homeschooling played a role in their success.

#8 You can volunteer at your kids’ school or participate in their extracurricular activities.

If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you have the flexibility to do things like volunteer at your child’s school or participate in their extracurricular activities. This is a great way to be involved in your child’s life and get to know their friends and teachers.

#9 You can more easily care for your home and your family.

When you’re a stay-at-home mom, you have more time to devote to keeping your home clean and organized. You also have more time to cook healthy meals for your family. In all honesty, working outside the home and caring for children and a household after work is just hard.

#10 Avoid work-related stress.

A study by the American Psychological Association found that nearly half of all Americans report feeling stressed about their jobs. If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you don’t have to worry about work-related stress.

#11 Your child will be sick less often.

Studies have shown that kids who stay home with their parents are sick less often than kids who go to daycare.

#12 You can be more flexible with your time.

When you’re a stay-at-home mom, you have the flexibility to schedule your day around your family’s needs. You don’t have to worry about juggling work and family commitments. This is by far one of my favorite things about being a stay-at-home mom. I get to make my own schedule and I have the time or can make the time to help and serve my family, friends, and church community as needed.

#13 Peaceful, less hectic mornings.

Mornings are hectic for most families with working parents. But when you’re a stay-at-home mom, you can take your time getting everyone ready for the day. Slow mornings allow you to accomplish what you need to get done without the stress of getting out the door on time.

  1. You get to be the boss! The one who decides that the day is too nice to stay inside and just perfect for a picnic and hike in the woods. No one is clamoring for you to complete tasks, threatening you with firing if you take a day off from laundry. You get to set the agenda and do things your own way, in your own time, and to your own standards. I loved being a stay-at-home mom and homeschooler. All our children are adults now, some are married and have begun their own families. The other benefit is building strong relationships with your children that get you through turbulent years and into adulthood that brings the reward of having raised your best friends.
  2. To me, being a SAHM comes with realisation that my life has the best purpose: to be there for my family, mostly my son, but also my husband, who gets clean cosy home, healthy meals and help in many problems, as not working I have time to be there for him. Unfortunately, where I live, in a big city, my choice gets to be often judged ( I had a “high flying” career before and some people can’t stop mentioning it). I don’t treat being at home as a sacrifice but it gets on my nerves that it’s apparently a problem for people who really shouldn’t care. Thank you for this beautiful blog and sharing your experiences, it gives me boost of faith in my own choices :)
  3. I found this blog because I searched 'what is the point of being a stay at home mom". I've been a SAHM for three years now. I have four kids (6 y, 4y, 3y, & 1y), three boys and a baby girl. I was in the Navy for six years before getting out to be a police officer, a dream that was dashed for several reasons, but looking back, I see that ultimately the Lord just didn't want that for me or our family. Most days I feel like this is where I belong, but there are some seasons, seasons and days like today, where I feel so low. So desperately low. Like I am worthless because I don't provide any money to our household, because there is no "promotion" as a result of hard work, and there are no breaks from the constant work I do. I love my children. I love my husband. I love Jesus, and I know that all I have is directly from my Father in heaven. I also know that right now there is a battle raging on around all SAHMs, especially those who are believers. I feel that spiritual attack right now. If any SAHMs out there reading this can relate, please pray for me, please pray for all of us, and our families, that the Lord would strengthen us and restore our joy in Him. Thank you for the blog post, Melissa. The Lord has used you today in my life.
    1. Oh Paola, the work you are doing has eternal rewards! I know it's hard and some days can feel thankless, but you will never regret the time you spent at home with your children. I promise! As cliché as it is, as they say, the days are long but the years are short. The value you provide for your family day in and day out is so much greater than any paycheck! I'm proud of you for trying and for working hard. God sees the unseen work of your hands. As a stay at home mom, you CAN contribute to your family in monetary ways - learning to stretch your dollars is a valuable skill for every homemaker to have. Perhaps I'll write about that some more. Are there any questions you have that I could answer? God bless you!
