The Book of Revelation Study #8

Jesus is Our Savior

We have learned that Jesus offers us the gift of eternal life, but if we do not accept His gift, the punishment for our sins is death. It is our choice to choose life or death. It is a choice each one of us must make on our own. The Day of Judgment is coming and on that day no one can stand in our place. We need a savior!

How can we be saved? What must we do? Acts 16:31 tells us, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved…” Because we are sinners, we are in need of forgiveness. Most people are “good people.” For the most part, we go through our lives doing good deeds. However, doing good deeds does not mean we do not need a Savior. The Bible says “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

The Bible tells us, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John1:9 NIV. “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 NIV.

Confessing our sin also means that we turn away from sin. As believers we need to confess and repent! “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them, finds mercy.” Proverbs 28:13 NIV. There needs to be a genuine conversion of the heart. We need to be “born again.” In John 3:3, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

When we believe, confess, and repent, Jesus comes into our hearts and our lives are changed! (Revelation 3:20) We begin to see everything in a new light. We begin to look at the world around us through Jesus’ eyes! We see sin and corruption the way He sees them. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to abide in us. “If you love me, and obey my commands, I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of Truth.” John 14:15-17 NIV.

Because of this, we can be confident in our salvation, because it is His strength we rely on, not our own. “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6 NIV. “I can do all things through Christ Jesus which strengthens me.” Philippians 4:19

Unfortunately, for many Christians today, following Him in words is a lot easier than following Him in action. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21 NIV.

Jesus must be Lord and Savior of our lives not just Savior! Ask anyone on the street if they want to go to Heaven and pretty much everyone will say yes. No one wants to go to hell! However, it is a lot easier to crown Him Savior than it is to crown Him Lord of our lives. Crowning Him Lord of our lives means we allow Him to make the decisions we face every day. It means He is in control – not I. “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Galatians 2:20 NIV.

We are to reject this world and allow Christ to reign Lord of our lives.

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator… Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience… Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” Colossians 3:12-15 NIV.

As followers of Christ we will see the fruit of His Spirit in our lives. We will have evidence of a true heart conversion.

  • We will love others as Christ loved us. John 13:35, Matthew 5:44.
  • We will obey him. John 14:15, 1 John 3:24.
  • We will begin to live a new life. 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:16-26.
  • We will begin to understand God’s will for our lives. Romans 12:1, 2.
  • We will want to share with others what Christ has done. Acts 4:19, 20, Mark 5:19.
  • We will want to spend time talking with God. Luke 11:13, Ephesians 6:18.

The Good News

The good news of Revelation is that Jesus wants to save you and I! It was and is His desire that no one should be lost! Unfortunately, the Bible tells us that most people will be lost, that they will reject the free gift of salvation. “If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” Isaiah 1:19, 20 NIV.

We must be willing and obedient to His Word if we are to be saved. Sadly, most people are not willing to accept His free gift. Sin offers pleasure for the moment and most people would rather enjoy the pleasures of sin rather than suffer for Christ. (Hebrews 11:25) Sin came into this world in the beginning, but Christ has a plan to rid the universe of sin forever!

The first three books of the Bible tells us how sin came into this world, the last book of the Bible in Revelation tell us how sin will be destroyed forever more. It is the good news of Revelation!

“To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all of this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.” Revelation 21:6, 7 NIV.

Do you want to be saved by the blood of the Lamb? Are you ready to forsake this world and give Him control of your life?
