Embracing Hospitality: 5 Bible Verses about Opening Our Homes

Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about hospitality? Today I’m sharing 5 Bible verses on hospitality.

When I was a young homemaker, I had dreams of hosting dinner parties and entertaining guests with beautiful table settings and delicious food. It was a number of years before I was able to figure out how to make those dreams come true.

You see, I was very shy and introverted and I struggled to make friends. It wasn’t until I was a little older (mid-twenties) that I finally found a few friends – but hosting parties or other gatherings was still not something I felt confident in attempting.

But, as the years went on I became more confident in my ability as a homemaker and slowly, I let go of some of the hang-ups I had that kept me from having people over on a regular basis. And as my family grew, so did my capacity to host gatherings in my home.

Over the years I learned so much about what true hospitality means and how we as homemakers can use hospitality to build community and build people up.

These days, the idea of hospitality can sometimes feel like a lost art. Yet, welcoming others into our homes and lives is such a profound way to show love and kindness to others.

The Bible is rich with wisdom on hospitality, encouraging us to open our doors and hearts to others. Let’s look at some Bible verses that talk about the importance of hospitality.

Bible Verses About Hospitality

1. Romans 12:13

“Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” NIV.

This verse from Romans underscores the importance of actively practicing hospitality. It’s not just a suggestion but a call to action for Christians. Sharing with those in need and inviting others into our homes fosters a sense of community and belonging, reflecting the love of Christ in tangible ways.

Inviting people into your home is one way you can help others feel like they belong.

2. Hebrews 13:2

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”

This verse always amazes me! By welcoming strangers, you could be entertaining angels without even realizing it. Just imagine! This verse encourages us to see the divine potential in every act of kindness and to embrace the opportunity to serve others.

3. 1 Peter 4:9

“Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

I think this verse truly highlights the heart of hospitality and the attitude with which we should extend invitations into our home or inner circle: willingly and joyfully.

Grumbling or complaining about the effort involved detracts from the genuine spirit of giving. Instead, we are called to serve with a cheerful heart, finding joy in the act of welcoming others. I love having people in my home and consider it a true honor to be able to serve them.

4. Matthew 25:35

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”

In this powerful passage, Jesus identifies with those in need. By feeding the hungry, quenching the thirst of the needy, and inviting in the stranger, we are serving Jesus Himself. When we serve others, we have the opportunity to be the hands of Christ.

5. Luke 14:12-14

“When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Jesus challenges us to go beyond social norms and invite those who cannot repay us. This radical hospitality breaks down barriers and extends grace to those often overlooked. It calls us to be generous and inclusive, reflecting God’s boundless love. How can you extend invitations to others in your community or church who may not have the means to repay you?

Remember, hospitality isn’t about having the fanciest house or the latest decor. It’s not about impressing people but about making them feel valued, welcome, and loved.

Practicing Hospitality Today

Incorporating these biblical principles into our lives can transform how we view and practice hospitality. Here are a few practical tips:

  • Open Your Home: Whether it’s a simple meal or a cup of coffee, inviting someone into your home creates a space for connection and fellowship.
  • Be Attentive to Needs: Look for opportunities to help others, whether it’s providing a meal, offering a place to stay, or simply being a listening ear.
  • Welcome Strangers: Extend kindness to those you don’t know well. A friendly smile, a warm greeting, or an invitation to join in can make a significant impact.
  • Serve with Joy: Embrace the spirit of hospitality with a joyful heart, knowing that your efforts are meaningful and valuable.

I encourage you to embrace hospitality, not only to bless others but so that you can also experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from having people over. I hope these verses inspire you to open your doors and hearts more often this year!
