Planning my day like the Proverbs 31 woman is all about intentionality. It’s about choosing to live my life on purpose without distraction.

Yes, it requires some discipline, but it’s really not something that is difficult. Actually, making a plan will ultimately simplify life, freeing me up to love God and others well.

With a little work up front, you too can plan for your days as a Proverbs 31 woman!

Planning Your Day Like the Proverbs 31 Woman

What does planning for my day look like as a Proverbs 31 woman? You’ll want to begin with three actions.

Pray Over Your Plans

Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. (Proverbs 16:3, ESV)

It’s so easy to jump into planning and organizing without even thinking about praying. Praying is a quiet time activity, or whispers to God throughout the day when you need His strength, right? We already know that He calls us to manage our homes and love our families—so why would we need to pray when it comes to planning?

Because without prayer, our plans become our plans and not His. We can easily fall into the trap of doing all the things in our own strength instead of through His. And we can end up focusing on the good things instead of the best.

We are called to commit our work to the Lord—that is how our plans are established. By committing them to the Lord, we don’t have to hold on so tightly. We can be ready to pivot—to be flexible—with our plans when the inevitable interruptions come, and we can see those interruptions as God’s opportunities. We’ll be more open to allowing Him to adjust our plans along the way.

Be Intentional with Your Time

Intentionality is the key to living as a Proverbs 31 woman. Intentional means done on purpose, deliberate. Let’s consider the phrase done on purpose

What is our purpose?

Purpose: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists

This isn’t something that is mysterious. We are to glorify Him. We are to love God and others. We find more specifics throughout Scripture, but these three things seem to sum it up best.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:36–40, ESV)

So think of being an intentional woman as doing life on purpose—in such a way that glorifies God, loves Him, and loves others.

These things take time. Unfortunately, when we don’t make a plan our time is often spent in unintentional ways—ways that are often of less importance when it comes to living purposefully.

You may have heard the illustration of putting rocks, pebbles, and sand in a container. If you put the sand in first, there’s no room for the pebble and rocks. If you put the pebbles in first, you can add sand, but the rocks won’t fit.

You have to start with the rocks. The rocks are the most important things, the things that help you to live on purpose. The pebbles are the next most important things, and the sand is the least important. Planning helps you to get the rocks, then the pebbles in your week before the sand crowds them out.

Write it Down

Having a written plan is key to living intentionally. Yes, you can keep a digital planner, but the act of writing is a powerful tool in helping us stay organized. When we make a plan on a device, then we have to look at that device, whether it’s our phones, tablets, or computers, to see the plan. And once we pick up that device, we’re tempted to do other things on it as well. We tell ourselves, “I’ll just check _________ real quick.” And before we know it, we look up and realize we’ve lost precious time instead of doing that which we planned.

And that is one of the biggest benefits of using a planner or homemaking binder. You will go directly to a tool that will help you to reach your goals.

The very act of physical writing is a commitment to do the things you’ve written down. And the physical planner won’t distract you from doing what you intend.

What Kinds of Things Did the Proverbs 31 Woman Plan?

There are many activities the Proverbs 31 woman would have done each week that required some forethought and planning such as:

And although it may look a bit different, these activities are the essence of what we do as a Proverb 31 woman today. Consider what older women were to teach younger women according to Titus 2:3–5:

…[Older women] are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

Planning my day is key to all of these things.

The Goal

All of these things you can do, and it’s much easier when you make a plan to do them. We aren’t trying to be perfect wives and mothers—that’s not even possible. What we are trying to do is love God, our families, and others well.

So while we make an intentional plan to do so, let’s not forget to walk in the strength and grace of God each day.
