8 Ways to Help When You Feel Overwhelmed at Home

Do you ever feel like you’re stuck and just don’t know what to do next? I know there have been time in my life as a busy mom when I would look at the mess around me and just feel like it was impossible to fix.

Paralyzed by Feelings of Overwhelm

Have you’ve ever felt paralyzed by the mess in your house? I know I have!! This can happen when you feel overwhelmed because you just don’t know what to do. Here are some signs of being paralyzed by feelings of overwhelm:

  • You don’t know where to get started cleaning or decluttering your house
  • You feel overwhelmed by just trying to get the basics done each day
  • You struggle to make decisions because everything seems overwhelming
  • You feel frustrated and wish you could get your act together but it seems impossible

Feeling overwhelmed can happen for a variety of reasons. It can be because you have a lot of responsibility, or because there are too many things going on at once. It might also just come from being overloaded with information or the number and complexity of decisions you need to make.

Mental Load

Have you ever heard of mental load? Mental load is the amount of mental effort required to complete a task. Too much mental load can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed and overwhelmed behavior like procrastination or avoiding doing things altogether.

It’s not about how many tasks you have, but rather how difficult they are for you to do that will determine your level of mental load. Many women struggle with carrying the mental load for their families and household, even when their responsibilities are shared with a partner or children.

It can make all the difference to know your limits, prioritize tasks according to importance, and create a simple plan to get tasks done.

If you need to clean and organize your entire house, remember, it likely didn’t get messy and cluttered in one afternoon – and it may need more than one day to get things in order. That’s okay!

The time is going to pass anyway. Wishing you could magically fix all your clutter problems isn’t going to help get rid of the clutter. You must do the hard work of decluttering.

Go ahead and start getting things in order today – even if it’s just one small area of your house (a counter, a drawer, picking up the floor, etc).

Always remember, you can take your burdens – all those feelings of overwhelm – to Jesus everyday! He promises to carry them for you.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” ~ Matthew 11: 28-30

  1. I love your "Start with one thing" suggestion, Melissa. A big mess becomes a little mess before it's all cleaned up, and by working at it little by little you will get through it. It's the principle I work on with my gardening. I can only spare 30 minutes every second day, but the garden has gradually become neater over the past months. I also agree wholeheartedly that prayer and trusting in God's promises will help when you feel overwhelmed. Thanks again!
