Homemaking is a noble act of service. When women seek to create an inviting space for their friends and family they are ultimately serving the Risen Savior. The Proverbs 31 woman is a woman who understands that homemaking is a ministry worthy of her time.

The Proverbs 31 Homemaker

Homemaking is an honor that we often take for granted – or even begrudge. Memories of home should be precious. What memories did you take with you when you left home? What memories will your children take with them?

One of the biggest questions I often ask myself is, “What will my children remember about home, about me? What do I want them to remember?”

Here at A Virtuous Woman, it’s my goal to help you in your quest to be the best wife, mother, and friend you can be. You’ll find thousands of ideas and hundreds of free printables to help you along the way.

Learning to Enjoy Homemaking

It’s easy to allow ourselves to feel overwhelmed or discouraged with the work of housekeeping. But it is possible to enjoy homemaking!

I’ve been a homemaker for nearly 30 years. That’s a long time! And over those years I’ve had moments where I was discouraged or even frustrated by the amount of work I had before me. And in all honestly, as a young homemaker I wasn’t particularly fond of the work required. But I learned to appreciate my role.

My mom was a wonderful homemaker. Even though she worked outside the home most of my childhood, she woke up early and somehow she managed to keep the house tidy. She never went to bed with a messy kitchen and we always had clean laundry folded in our drawers. She cooked good meals and really made us feel loved through her homemaking.

As a young woman, I wasn’t particularly good at homemaking. Some of it boiled down to the fact that I just didn’t want to keep house. So… I really only did what I absolutely had to. But then, as I had more children and learned better homemaking skills, I found myself enjoying the simple acts of homemaking.

Learning to enjoy homemaking really was a slow process for me. If you’ve read my testimony you know that I was a first time mom at the young age of 15. And over the following 10 years I slowly learned to enjoy homemaking such that I now look forward to days when I can focus on cleaning and prepping meals for the week and cooking nice dinners.

I like having a clean home.

In fact, I really love having a home that makes my family feel warm, secure, and loved. Homemaking isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating a space that feels like home!

If you were to walk into my house unannounced, you likely wouldn’t find everything neatly put away. We do live here after all! But you would find a mostly tidy space that brings me joy.

How to Enjoy Homemaking

Learn Basic Homemaking Skills | Homemaking 101

It’s always easier to enjoy something if you are good at it. Gone are the days when young women are taught basic homemaking skills in school. And often, young women are not really taught how to properly maintain a home by their mothers.

The Bible tells us the the Proverbs 31 Woman “looked well to the ways of her household.” Proverbs 31:27. That doesn’t mean she did everything herself!

The Proverbs 31 Woman is a woman who manages her home well so that the life of the family runs smoothly.

Many women today struggle with self discipline. But I’m here to help you learn to be more self disciplined at home! I can promise you, being self disciplined is one of the best skills you will ever learn.

People who are self disciplined are happier and more successful. According to a study published in the Journal of Personality, self discipline or self control ” positively contributes to happiness through avoiding and dealing with motivational conflict.”

Proverbs 31:13 says, “She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.” The Proverbs 31 Woman is a woman who has self discipline.

The good news is, God is faithful to help you with every aspect of life – including self discipline. The Bible says:

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
